Photographs by Norman Seeff:
The Lost Archive
27 September - 9 October 2013
For over four decades, acclaimed photographer Norman Seeff has produced some of the world’s most enduring images of pop culture icons, from musicians to moguls, actors to athletes. Now, Christie’s presents the first-ever auction of vintage gelatin silver prints by this illustrious artist, on sale from Sept. 27-Oct 9 in an exclusive online-only sale.
Independently, and as creative director for United Artists Records, Seeff is perhaps best known for creating some of the greatest album covers of the 1970s and ‘80s. Along the way, the South African photographer’s uncanny ability to illuminate the true spirit of his subjects has extended well beyond celebrity portraiture, earning his work a place in museum exhibitions, on best-selling book and album covers, and in the pages of magazines like Rolling Stone, Time and Life. Vintage prints by Seeff are extremely rare, and many in this sale are unique. As authentic ‘work prints’, these objects were physically presented to artists and their agents for approval, becoming vehicles for the world’s perception of some of the greatest stars of our time. The estimates are extremely attractive ($2,500-$7,000), offering both established and beginning collectors an extraordinary chance to own an original piece of pop culture history.
