Kan Yasuda | Touching Time

24 February – 26 March | New York

It is a great honor for Christie’s to present Touching Time, the first exhibition of monumental sculpture by Kan Yasuda in the United States.

The artist is critically acclaimed in his native Japan and throughout Europe. For over forty years Kan Yasuda has maintained a studio in Pietrasanta, Italy in addition to a studio in his homeland of Hokkaido, Japan. Classically trained in both Japan and Italy, Kan Yasuda is one of the pre-eminent contemporary Japanese sculptors. The largest concentration of his artwork is installed in the the Arte Piazza Bibai, a sculpture park that celebrates the depth of Kan Yasuda’s œuvre. A collaboration between Kan Yasuda and the city of Bibai, We are proud to announce that the sculpture park will soon be renamed Kan Yasuda Sculpture Museum to celebrate the lifetime of achievements by the artist. Works are also on public view across the country with a concentration in Tokyo. In Europe, his work has been installed extensively in Italy, most notably in Assisi and Rome. In the United Kingdom, his sculptures are featured at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and at the Fitzwilliam Museum. Until this exhibition, his only show in the United States has been at the Eykyn Maclean Gallery in 2014, which included smaller scale works which were met with much success.

The absorbing forms of Yasuda’s sculpture reflect elements of the natural world, which are designed to reflect the viewing experience. The pieces are both monumental and domestic in scale, and engaging in form and material. They benefit from careful contemplation and contract with the machine age architecture of New York City against which they exert a powerful spiritual force.
