With more than $556 million in global auction sales realised in 2017, Christie’s Jewellery department maintains its position as market leader for the 24th consecutive year. Nine world auction records were achieved, including the record price for a heart-shaped diamond and a record price per carat for a Fancy Intense blue diamond.
In Geneva in November, the sale of Beyond Boundaries: Magnificent Jewels from a European Collection totalled $12,430,343, selling 100 per cent by lot and by value and setting a record for a single-owner collection of Art Nouveau and Art Deco jewellery.
‘The nine world records set by the department in 2017 were driven by intense competition from collectors who bid at the highest levels for important diamonds, rare gems and jewels,’ says Rahul Kadakia, International Head of Jewellery at Christie’s. ‘We also saw immense growth in our online sales, which encouraged clients to enjoy the auction experience at all price points.’
Kadakia points to specific sales at key hubs in Geneva, Hong Kong and New York across the year, noting in particular the historic sale of the Rockefeller Emerald, which realised $5,511,500 in New York in June, and set a world auction record price per carat for an emerald; the Grand Mazarin, a pale pink diamond of 19.07 carats with three centuries of royal provenance, which realised $14,463,400 in Geneva; de Grisogono’s 163.41 carat D-flawless diamond, sold for $33,705,900, setting a record for any D-colour flawless diamond; and the Pink Promise, an oval-shaped Fancy Vivid pink diamond of 14.93 carats, which realised $32,163,900 in Hong Kong, setting the world auction record price per carat for a pink diamond.
The pieces offered in the November Beyond Boundaries sale in Geneva — an exceptional collection of Art Nouveau and Art Deco jewels — sparked international interest, with extremely competitive bidding in the saleroom, on the telephones and online. The top lot, an Art Nouveau pendant necklace by René Lalique, sold for $978,480, setting a world auction record for an Art Nouveau jewel, as well as for a jewel by Lalique.
‘This has been a stellar year for jewellery at Christie’s,’ Kadakia says. ‘As we move into 2018, our global team of jewellery specialists looks forward to bringing to market the very best jewels for our clients.’
