A PARCEL-GILT POLYCHROME CIRCULAR ENAMEL EWER BASIN
VENETIAN, CIRCA 1500
The gadrooned well with further gadrooned circular section and applied Limoges enamel medallion of St Barbara, elaborately gilded overall, the reverse with dark blue enamel and gold florettes; very minor chips, restorations
The enamel platter offered here is exceptional for its size and the quality of the gilding. Very few other Venetian enamel platters are known to survive on this scale, however two other examples were lent by the Wadsworth Atheneum and Miss Henriette Granville to the Decorative Arts of the Italian Renaissance 1400-1600 exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts (loc. cit.). The Wadsworth Atheneum example is arguably the more comparable of the two as it displays a similar palate and denseness of gilt-decoration to the present lot. A final and unusual aspect of the platter offered here is that it is decorated with a contemporary Limoges enamel medallion to the centre.
