With the bottom third of this carpet in completely full, nearly original pile, we are able to understand the brilliance of Isfahan carpets as they were when they were created in the 17th century. Here, we are able to appreciate the full range of color and design elements that truly create a garden within a carpet. The border is very sophisticated and unusual with reciprocal rose and light indigo leaf pairs alternating with two varieties of palmettes. A very similar border is seen on a multiple medallion carpet from the same period and illustrated by Arthur Upham Pope (A.U. Pope, A Survey of Persian Art, London, Vol. XII, pl. 1179).
