Three illuminated initials: 15-line initial opening Nicholas of Lyra's prologue in blue modelled with white on burnished gold ground with punched decoration and fictive frame alternating green and red, initial opening St. Jerome's prologue in green with white modelling on gold ground within blue-grey frame, initial opening Genesis in blue-grey with white modelling on punched gold ground, other 3- to 12-line initials and paragraph marks alternating in red and blue, printed guide-letters in final quires. AN ERFURT BINDING BY STEIFER HIRSCH: contemporary blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards, panelled sides with pierced-heart, dog, fleur-de-lis and rosette stamps, metal corner and central bosses, 8 corner-pieces, 2 rods on front cover, 2 fore-edge clasps (splits at hinges, rubbed, somewhat stained and darkened without central boss on rear cover). Provenance: title with MS date 1629 -- Wilhelm von Hamme, of Brussels (engraved armorial bookplate dated 1659) -- Detlef Mauss (pencilled annotations, acquired at Hartung, 1985).
A handsomely decorated Bible. The fine woodcuts are copied from the Scotus edition of 8 August 1489, which was the first illustrated Latin Bible printed in Italy.
