Born around 590/1194, Ibn Abi Usaybi'a belonged to a family of physicians who lived in Damascus. He practised at the Nuri hospital there and in 634/1236 entered the service of the Amir 'Izz al-Din Aybak al-Mu'azzami in Sarkhad where he died in 668/1270. He wrote various works on medicine which are now lost and a work of biography called 'Uyun al-anba' fi tabakat al-atibba' which is mentioned in a note on the opening flyleaf.
