[GOLD RUSH CALIFORNIA AND THE SOUTHWEST]. ORD, Edward Otho Cresap, II. An archive of documents, letters, journals and artifacts retained by the son of E.O.C. Ord (1818-1883). Ord, who graduated from West Point and served as a brigadier general in the Civil War, went to California in 1847 with Henry Halleck and William T. Sherman as a surveyor; he produced several maps of the gold region (including the first accurate map produced after the initial strikes). Ord's son (E.O.C. Ord II) played an integral role in the mining history of the West and Southwest by owning numerous mines and through various gold-mining inventions, including an improved mining pan which allowed a prospector to recycle a water supply for mining in dry regions (several original prototypes are included).
The collection includes: ORD, William M.
