Lot Essay

Arthur Edward Guest (1841-1898) was the fifth son of Sir Josiah John Guest, 1st Bt. (1785-1852) and Lady Charlotte Elizabeth Bertie (1812-1895). He was educated at Harrow School then Cambridge. Guest briefly represented the Conservative constituency of Poole in the House of Commons before joining the board of the London and South-Western Railway, and becoming involved with a number of other train companies. He was also a keen yachtsman and was an Honorary Lieutenant in the Royal Navy Reserve, making numerous trips to America during his career. He married Adeline Mary Chapman in 1867 by whom he had two children. He was responsible for bringing the American steamers to Southampton and was the only foreign member of the 'Old Philadelphia Club'.

He can hit birds, he can fish.... He is a cheery, genial soul, and an excellent host, who can tell an after-dinner story. He never raced, and he only plays cards for love.

Vanity Fair, 'Men of the Day', No. 657, 1896.
