Christie’s Magazine

September – October 2019 Issue

It’s the September issue of Christie’s Magazine, and we’ve refreshed the look to mark the occasion. Our bold new cover design and typography, expanded sales section and more compact, easier-to-carry format are all geared to enriching the conversation with like-minded individuals.

In the issue, journalist Michael Watts speaks to David Dawson, Lucian Freud’s long-time friend and model, who is curating an important new exhibition of Freud self-portraits opening in London this autumn. We celebrate the art of collecting in a wide-ranging interview with the erudite and brilliant Old Masters collector Richard Feigen, one of the most influential art dealers since the end of the Second World War.

In a special section on the vibrant, thriving art hub that is Chicago, the architect Tadao Ando shares his views on the city’s finest buildings, Chicago-born artist Amanda Williams explains how her art is informed by growing up in the city’s South Side, James Rondeau discusses the responsibility that comes with running the venerable Art Institute of Chicago, and our regular columnist Andrew Graham-Dixon unpicks the meaning of one of the museum’s best-known pictures – Grant Wood’s American Gothic. And we salute five Chicago curators who are inspiring the debate about the difference great art can make to a city and to a society.

The issue contains a preview of the upcoming auction season, with highlights from across Christie’s global salerooms; and Cristian Albu, one of our leading Post-War and Contemporary Art specialists, talks about his life and work, and recounts how his first meaningful encounters with art took place inside darkened Orthodox churches in communist Romania.

I hope you enjoy the issue!
