Christie's Design Sales Total $17.4M

NEW YORK – Christie’s Design sales in New York totaled $17,436,000 over three live sales of Design in New York, including Paris in New York: A Private Collection of Royère, Vautrin, Jouve, Tiffany and Design. With very strong, spirited global cross-category bidding, these outstanding results demonstrated the strength and depth of the Design market.

93% sold by lot | 267% hammer above low estimate

Paris in New York: A Private Collection of Royère, Vautrin, Jouve totaled $7,033,000, 93% sold by lot and 267% hammer above low estimate. The sale was led by an iconic Ours Polaire Sofa by Jean Royère which achieved a world record for the model at auction. Other highlights included a rare pair of Sculpture Armchairs which sold for $882,500 and a Tour Eiffel Floor Lamp which realized $762,000. A ‘Yo-yo’ Table, circa 1950, achieved $600,000 – over 17 times its high estimate of $35,000.

93% sold by lot | 145% hammer above low estimate

Following the success of the Tiffany Montgomery collection, Tiffany, the first dedicated various owner sale of works by Tiffany Studios held at Christie’s since 2014, totaled $3,903,375, with 93% sold by lot and 145% hammer above low estimate. The sale was led by the exceptional Landscape Window with Magnolias, Hydrangeas and Azaleas, circa 1915, which achieved $1,470,000. Other notable results include a Floral Window, circa 1910, which realized $281,250, more than 5x its high estimate; the ‘Pond Lily’ Table Lamp, circa 1905, which sold for $200,000; and the 'Turtle-back Tile' Chandelier, circa 1905, which achieved $150,000.

Christie’s live sale of Design achieved $6,499,625. Top prices include François-Xavier Lalanne’s Brochet, circa 1973, Josef Hoffman’s Unique Chandelier, Model No. M0409, for Dr. Hermann Wittgenstein, and Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann’s rare Low Table, sold for $425,000. Other remarkable results from the sale include Claude Lalanne’s La Dormeuse, 1974, which realized $387,500, over 5x its high estimate, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Monumental Teco Vase, designed for Susan Lawrence Dana, Springfield, circa 1902, which achieved $362,500, over 7x its high estimate and a world record for any work by Teco sold at auction and Rietveld’s early ‘Beugelstoel’ Chair which sold for $300,000.
