Hong Kong – On 1 December, Christie’s Hong Kong staged two evening auctions – Worlds In A Hand, a thematic sale, which achieved a total of HK598,817,500/ US$77,163,922 and the 20th / 21st Century Art Evening Sale, which totalled HK$896,185,000/ US$115,482,847, with combined sell-through rates of 96% by lot and 95% by value. Christie’s Hong Kong achieved the highest Evening Sale total for the category in Asia this season, among all auction houses, and also the second highest Evening Sale total ever for Christie’s Asia. The bustling saleroom, supported by auxiliary salerooms in London and New York, invited fervent participation by an extensive and diverse collector base from 14 countries across 4 continents.
The Evening Sales witnessed masterpieces by iconic legends Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gerhard Richter, and Sanyu exceed the HK$100 million threshold, and established artist records for visionary female artists including Yayoi Kusama and Françoise Gilot.
Jacky Ho, Head of Evening Sale, 20th and 21st Century Art Department, Christie’s Asia Pacific, added, “We are very delighted with the incredible results and heated participation in both sales, which not only demonstrate the tremendous display of market confidence in Asia, but also underscores our successful curatorial strategy and unrivalled expertise in offering exceptional works by the most-in-demand artists to collectors with the most discerning eye. Once again, blue chip artists performed very well, highlighting their continued allure to collectors. This season also saw particularly fantastic results for younger and emerging artists, demonstrating the constantly developing and evolving tastes of our collector base in Asia. The sensational results and artist records set in our Hong Kong saleroom affirm Christie’s Hong Kong’s appeal as a key global art hub.”
