Comment: Joy McCall, Head of 20th Century Decorative Art and Design, Christie’s London:

The sale began with a single-owner collection that captured the imagination of international bidders demonstrating the continuing strength of interest in Art Nouveau, Symbolism and Art Deco.  From amongst the various owner properties in the sale, it was the Exotic Dancer by Demetre Chiparus, which realised the top price of £193,250.  Also particularly sought after were Francois-Xavier Lalanne’s bronze shark, Le Requin, realised £85,250, and Richard Riemerschmid’s Ceiling Lamp, realised £46,850, commissioned for his brother’s Munich distillery.
