RELEASE: POST-WAR & CONTEMPORARY ART AUCTIONS - Christie's 14-15 October. A Foreword by Francis Outred

Post-War & Contemporary Art Evening Auction - King Street, 14-15 October 2011

“Frieze art fair week has become a major focus of the global art calendar in its relatively short period of existence. Its growing importance over the last seven years has been reflected in progressively stronger sales to cater for the increasing demand for high quality material. I am delighted to say that this year, our team at Christie’s have put together the strongest group of works for this sale season that we have ever witnessed. With more than 300 lots expected to realize a combined total in the region of £50 million, Christie's two days of Post-War and Contemporary Art auctions in London (October 14-15) certainly promises much in terms of value, but it is the quality of material which excites me most. Exquisite groups of works by the likes of Piero Manzoni, Damien Hirst, Richard Prince, Alighiero Boetti and Lucio Fontana form the backbone of the week alongside an iconic group of contemporary British sculptures by Antony Gormley, Damien Hirst and Ron Mueck. Aside from the art fair, the other undoubted destination of the week will be Gerhard Richter's panorama exhibition at Tate Modern and we are delighted to lead the sales with an outstanding example of his seminal series of 'Kerze' or Candles painted in 1982-83 which is estimated to realise £6,000,000-9,000,000 / US$9,100,000-14,000,000 / €6,800,000-10,000,000. This completely timeless image became a sign of the unification of east and west Germany and as such, literally holds up a light to the global world of today”.
