MONET’S NYMPHÉAS LEADS THE WEEK AT $43.8 MILLION
CHRISTIE’S DAY SALES FETCH A COMBINED $39.7 MILLION
KANDINSKY EMERGES AS THE HEADLINING ARTIST OF THE EVENING AND DAY SALES
New York – Christie’s two-day sales series devoted to the finest in Impressionist and Modern Art realized a combined total of $244,488,775 (£154,027,928 /€190,701,245). Throughout both sales, strong results were achieved for works by Monet, Miró, Picasso, Brancusi, and Renoir, and a new world auction record of $23.0 million was set for any work by Kandinsky. At $43.8 million, Monet’s Nymphéas fetched the 2nd highest auction price on record for the artist.
Following our $204.8 million Evening Sale on Wednesday, Christie’s achieved a combined $39,688,775 (£25,003,928/€30,957,245) on Thursday through its popular Works on Paper and Day sales.
David Kleiweg de Zwaan, Head of the Works on Paper Sale, and Stefany Sekara Morris, Head of the Day Sale, noted: “In an echo of the record-setting result achieved Wednesday evening for Kandinsky, our top lot of the Day sale of Impressionist & Modern Art was “Rapallo, Boote” (pictured above right), a rare early seascape by the artist. The richly-textured work was chased by multiple bidders, and ultimately sold to an American bidder for $1 million, well over its pre-sale estimate. Our morning session of Works on Paper continues to draw in a strong contingent of devoted collectors, who gathered to compete for works by Klee, Picasso, Magritte and Chagall, driving strong results for each.”
