4 IMPORTANT PRIVATE COLLECTIONS OF RARE WINES

  

 

AT CHRISTIE’S HONG KONG ON 27 & 28 NOVEMBER

 

Hong Kong - This autumn, Christie’s Hong Kong Wine Department will hold two days of auctions featuring four important private collections and including great mature wines ready for drinking.

The sales will kick-off on 27 November with an extensive single-owner collection including the finest and rarest Burgundy wines from Lalou Bize-Leroy’s world-famous Domaine Leroy, Maison Leroy and Domaine d’Auvenay. This collection will be highlighted by a lot formed by more than 12 bottles of assorted Domaine Leroy 1995 wines estimated at HK$110,000-140,000 / US$14,261-18,150 (lot 5349; illustrated above left).

On the following day, a wide array of outstanding wines from the world’s most prestigious estates will be auctioned  including a major selection from a very important Hong Kong collector to be led by a case of 12 bottles of Romanée-Conti 1988, Grand Cru, Côte de Nuits estimated at HK$950,000-1,300,000 / US$120,000-170,000 (lot 6086; illustrated on page 2).

Furthermore this sale will feature part II of Dr. Ku’s Apothecary collection which will be highlighted by an assortment of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2009 (a lot of 12 bottles estimated at HK$200,000-300,000 / US$26,000-38,000 (lots 6727-6729; illustrated above right). It will also present the final opportunity to acquire top Bordeaux, Burgundy and Tuscan wines offered from the private collection of Sir Alex Ferguson CBE, the legendary Manchester United’s former manager.

A SINGLE-OWNER COLLECTION OF FINEST & RAREST WINES

 

On 27 November 2015, Christie’s Hong Kong will offer at auction a private single-owner collection comprising some of the finest and rarest wines from Champagne, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhône, Loire, Mosel, Piedmont, Spain, California and Australia.

Of particular note is the large selection of exceptional Burgundy from Lalou Bize-Leroy’s world-famous Domaine Leroy, Maison Leroy and Domaine d’Auvenay, rare magnums of Vega Sicilia Unico and mature classed growth Bordeaux from exceptional vintages from all the top Châteaux.

Many of the wines from this collection were acquired at Christie’s auctions between 1996 and 1999, while the rare Leroy, Domaine D’Auvenay and Domaine de la Romanée Conti wines have been purchased directly from the estates. All the wines were stored in the impeccable conditions at Octavian Vaults in Wiltshire, UK prior to shipment to Hong Kong specifically for this sale.

This collection also features numerous exciting yet affordable wines rarely on offer in Asia, such as a lot of mixed 1999 J.J. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr wines from Germany, which includes more than 12 bottles and 24 half-bottles and is estimated at HK$5,500-7,500 / US$713-972 (lot 5537; illustrated right).

 

Dr. KU’s APOTHECARY COLLECTION PART II

 

On 28 November, part II of Dr. Gordon Ku’s wine collection will be auctioned at Christie’s.    A renowned physician, Dr. Ku’s passion for wine began over 40 years ago and features a great selection of top vintages, including mature wines from classic regions, from Burgundy to the Rhône valley.

Amongst the highlights of Dr. Ku’s extensive collection is a group of some 40 lots of the most sought-after champagne wines, such as a case of 12 bottles of Krug, Brut 1998, Reims, estimated at HK$17,000-24,000 / US$2,200-3,000 (lots 6483-6484; illustrated left).

Dr. Gordon Ku, commented: “Wine drinking and collecting is far from mundane, as it requires knowledge, experience and discipline. Moreover, wine is a good asset class. It is a “liquid” asset, and anti-inflationary. Faced with the inability to achieve immortality, a desire to share my passion with others, and a need to create more space for tomorrow’s wines, it is time again for me to part with a portion of my ‘Apothecary: Part II” As such, I see this sale as a celebration of LIFE, GOOD FOOD and WINE, and SHARING”.

 

A VERY IMPORTANT HONG KONG COLLECTOR

 

Also on 28 November, Christie’s Hong Kong Wine Department will offer an important private collection from Hong Kong comprising of the finest and rarest wines from Champagne, Bordeaux, Burgundy, California and Vintage Port.

All these wines come from the most prestigious wine estates such as the First Growths of Bordeaux, Lafite Rothschild, Latour and Mouton Rothschild, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Liger-Belair, Coche-Dury and Ramonet to name but a few.

The wines were stored in professional cellars since their purchase from major auction houses and have been slowly maturing under temperature and humidity controlled conditions in Hong Kong ever since.

Of particular note, a case of 12 bottles of Romanée-Conti 1988, Grand Cru, Côte de Nuits in impeccable condition is estimated at HK$950,000-1,300,000 / US$120,000-170,000 (lot 6086; illustrated right).

THE PRIVATE COLLECTION OF SIR ALEX FERGUSON CBE

 

This autumn, Christie's Hong Kong will also be offering a final opportunity to acquire some of the world’s most iconic wines - directly from the private collection of perhaps the world's most iconic Football personality ever, Sir Alex Ferguson CBE (portrayed right).

The sale will feature a wide array of Bordeaux, Burgundy and Tuscan wines which the legendary former manager of Manchester United has purchased from the most reliable and trusted agent sources in the UK.

All bottles are additionally proof-tagged TM with “Sir Alex Ferguson CBE Collection” to preserve their unique provenance and, as a special souvenir of the sale, each buyer will receive a signed copy of Sir Alex’s recent book: Leading (the book cover illustrated left).
