RESULTS: Christie’s Hong Kong Evening sales

Major artists auction records broken for Chu The-Chun, Lin Fengmian, Atsuko Tanaka, Anita Magsaysay-Ho and Lee Shih-Chiao

Second highest price ever achieved for Sanyu at auction

The top lot of the evening sales, was Chrysanthemums in a Glass Vase by Sanyu, painted circa 1950s, which realised HK$ 103,580,000/ US$13,412,854.

5 new world auction records were set for the artists, Chu Teh-Chun, Lin Fengmian, Atsuko Tanaka, Anita Magsaysay-Ho and Lee Shih-Chiao.

Rebecca Wei, President Christie’s Asia, commented “The Pioneers sale was met with great enthusiasm across Asia, with passionate bidding from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, China, Singapore, with 87% sold by lot. Collectors once again responded well to a tightly curated, themed sale of masterpieces from the trailblazing modern and contemporary artists who ushered in an era of artist evolution and innovation”.

Jonathan Stone, Chairman & International Head of Asian Art added “The average lot value in The Pioneers sale exceeded HKD$25 million, demonstrating intense demand for artistic masterpieces. The strong reception and artists’ auction records achieved testify to the strength of pan Asian artists this season from China, Taiwan, the Philippines and Japan, among others”.

The day sales of Asian Contemporary Art and Asian 20th Century Art will both be held on 27 November, with the first of the sales starting at 10.30 am.
