Coinciding with Frieze Week, Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Day Sale on 15 October presents an exciting selection of works by leading artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Leading the sale are Cecily Brown’s Twice Told Tales I (1998), following the artist’s acclaimed exhibition Cecily Brown: Picture Making at the Serpentine Gallery in London; Sean Scully's Wall of Light Reef (2012), a luminous meditation on colour and structure from the artist's celebrated series; and George Condo's St. Jerome (2007), drawing on the momentum of the artist’s major exhibition at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris earlier this year.
The sale also features two exceptional works by Josef Albers, Study for Homage to the Square: Earth Glow (1963) and Red Front (1947-1956), from Radiant Modernism: From Signac to Albers. At the heart of the sale are outstanding works by German masters, led by the Collection of Senator and Mrs. Thomas F. Eagleton, which showcases an extraordinary selection of works on paper, including two watercolours by Gerhard Richter. Further works include important paintings by Anselm Kiefer, Georg Baselitz, Martin Kippenberger and Günther Förg.
The sale additionally features a dynamic array of sculpture by Carol Bove, Louise Bourgeois, Ugo Rondinone, and Thaddeus Mosley. Other highlights include Ana Mendieta’s Untitled: Silueta Series (1978), coinciding with the artist's first major UK survey at the Tate Modern in London; and Uzo Egonu’s Woman Reading (1978), following the painting’s recent inclusion at Tate Modern's Nigerian Modernism.
