Anthology of Design: Masterworks from a French-American Collection

Sale Overview

Christie’s is honored to present this fall Anthology of Design: Masterworks from a French-American Collection. Assembled over more than two decades, this exceptional collection brings together some of the most celebrated names in design history, through works distinguished by rarity, provenance and uncompromising quality.

The result is a deeply personal interior, shaped by intelligence and invention, which brings together the constructive genius of Jean Prouvé, the machine-age vision of Charlotte Perriand, the poetic whimsy of François-Xavier Lalanne, the freedom of Ron Arad and the exuberant colors of Ettore Sottsass.

Highlights include Lalanne's important group of three Moutons de Laine, formerly in the collection of renowned gallerist Alexandre Iolas and exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1967; Perriand's rare Table de Luxe à rallonge mécanique, conceived for the 1930 U.A.M. exhibition; and a comprehensive selection of Prouvé chairs spanning 1943 to 1968.

The selection is further distinguished by compelling expressions in ceramics and pottery, from Georges Jouve's richly saturated monochromatic glazes to Hans Coper and Lucie Rie's pioneering explorations of form, surface and texture. Together, these works reflect a lifetime of discerning collecting, guided by an unwavering pursuit of perfection.
