The 27 January sale includes works from the late 15th through to the 19th Century. Among the earliest works are rare examples by Marcantonio Raimondi, Giovanni Francesco Penni — both artists in the circle of Raphael, and another artist in the circle of Filippino Lippi. Dutch artists are well represented by exceptional works by Maaerten van Heemskerck and Adriaen van de Velde (the latter formerly in the collection of the late Dr. Anton Dreesmann), as well as a group of drawings from the Estate of Eric Martin Wunsch. There is a lovely group of French drawings which span from the 17th Century (Claude Lorrain) through the 19th Century (Theodore Gericault, in addition to fine works by some of the most important British draughtsman such as John Constable, J.M.W. Turner and Samuel Palmer, all of which come from private American collections.
We are also pleased to announce that for the first time ever Old Master Paintings sales will be included in Classic Art at Christie's, which takes place in New York in April 2016. Over a two-week period, Rockefeller Center will be transformed into a museum of classical art as exceptional works are exhibited from our Old Masters, Decorative Arts, Sculpture and Antiquities departments. We invite you to explore some early highlights from our April Old Master auctions.
