In July, Christie’s will offer The Collection of Raine, Countess Spencer for auction. Lady Spencer, the only daughter of novelist Barbara Cartland, enjoyed a position at the centre of London society for more than 60 years, having been named Deb of the Year in 1947. The collection includes important Old Master paintings, English and European furniture, ormolu-mounted hardstone objects, clocks, Chinese jades, jewellery, Art Deco furniture and sculpture, as well as a selection of couture, jewellery and accessories from her personal wardrobe. Highlights from Lady Spencer’s superb collection of French 18th century Old Masters, including works by Vernet, Fragonard and Boucher will be offered in the Old Masters evening sale at Christie’s King Street on 6 July followed by a dedicated collection sale on 13 July: The Collection of Raine, Countess Spencer, which will offer unique insights into the private world of one of the last debutantes to be presented at court.
