Modern, Post-War & Contemporary Art at Christie’s Paris concluded on 18 October with a combined total of €42,983,625. World auction records were set for artists Geer van Velde and Pierre Alechinsky, whose Mur d’oiseaux sold for an exceptional €1,387,500.

Starting the sale series, Paris Avant-Garde achieved €29,602,250, with Picasso’s Guitare, bouteille et compotier reaching €3,982,500. The Art Moderne sale saw its top lot, Chagall’s Les mariés au bord de la Seine, sell for €1,543,500 and Jeanne Hébuterne’s Autoportrait realise €247,500, quadrupling its pre-sale low estimate.

Our Post-War and Contemporary Art department saw all lots sold, while highlights for the Impressionist and Modern Art department included Fernand Léger’s Nature morte, which sold for €1,039,500 and Chaïm Soutine’s La place de la Liberté à Céret. The sale of Bénédicte Pesle’s personal collection achieved exceptional sell-through rates of 100% by lot and by value. The top lot was Ernst’s Âmes-sœurs, selling for €787,500, followed by James Bishop’s Blue, green, red, which realised €223,500.

The auction series had 884 registered bidders worldwide, with buyers from 30 different countries.
