Art for Access: An Initiative to Support Scholarships at Bennington College

New York, Fall 2019

Christie's is proud to continue its partnership with Bennington College on Art for Access, an innovative fundraising initiative launched in 2018 that celebrates the College’s pioneering legacy in the visual arts while advancing its commitment to equity, diversity, and access.

As an institution without a museum or permanent collection, Bennington College has long held that the works of art on its campus be a changing, dynamic teaching resource. Through Art for Access, Bennington extends this vision and seeks gifts of art from donors and friends with two related aims in mind: to develop and expand the works of art in the College’s holdings to enrich the educational experience, and, after extended use in teaching, to provide funding for scholarships for talented students through the sale of select artworks.

An inaugural series of auctions at Christie’s New York and Paris in 2018 raised more than $3.1 million for scholarships from sales of donated works by Helen Frankenthaler, Diego Rivera and Georges Mathieu, among others. A second group of nine artworks will be featured in Christie’s fall sales of contemporary art in New York, including works by Anne Truitt, Adolph Gottlieb, Robert Motherwell, Richard Serra, Larry Poons, Anthony Caro and Hank Willis Thomas. Visit our sale page for more information about this season’s Art for Access offerings.
