Islamic Art Week

London, 14 – 25 October 2016

Christie’s presents Islamic Art Week, four exceptional sales showcasing treasures from across the Islamic and Indian worlds. Held in our King Street and South Kensington salerooms from 14 to 25 October, the sales offer both emerging and established collectors the opportunity to acquire works with exceptional provenance.

The Oriental Rugs & Carpets sale on 18 October features a rich array of weavings, which span centuries and cross borders. Highlights include a rare double-sided silk Heriz rug, an elegant Khorasan kelleh from Safavid Persia and a large Mughal gallery carpet that showcases classical weaving in India.

Nearly 200 lots will be offered in our October sale of Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds. Leading the sale is a previously unrecorded folio from the great Mughal text the Hamzanama, known for its fantastic stories and dramatic pictures. The sale also features an unusual Ptolemaic planetary model made for an Afsharid official; and a 17th-century Deccani copy of Kitab al-Hasha’ish – an Arabic translation of Dioscorides’ Herbals.

The Arts & Textiles of the Islamic & Indian Worlds sale at South Kensington will feature the Jourdan-Barry Collection of Indian Art, a private collection of lithographic and type-printed Qur’ans and a private collection of 19th-century ceramics in the Ottoman style. Highlights include selection of ceramic vessels with designs replicating Iznik iconography.

Islamic Art Week concludes on 25 October with the Indian Art Online sale. The paintings featured in this sale illustrate the variety of painting traditions of India, with examples from most iconic Rajasthani schools as well as works from the Pahari, Deccani and Company schools. With estimates ranging from $500 to $5,000, this online-only auction is an opportunity to acquire works of Islamic art at accessible price points.
