March at Christie’s Paris totalled €15,253,000 over three spectacular sales. Jean Bonna’s collection of Old Master drawings and modern works on paper realised a combined total of €914,625. Additional works from this distinguished Swiss collection will come to auction in London in July 2019 and New York in 2020.

Old Master and 19th Century Drawings Including Works from the Collection of Jean Bonna opened the trio of sales on 27 March with Ludolf Bakhuizen’s Chasse à la baleine, des voiliers à l’arrière-plan reaching €106,250 – five times its pre-sale low estimate. Other highlights of the day included the sale of Augustin Pajou’s La Famille du satyre ou l’Enfance de Bacchus, acquired by the Louvre, once again reaffirming the high calibre of works on offer at Christie’s.

On 28 March, our Modern Works on Paper Including Works from the Jean Bonna Collection sale saw realised a strong €4,455,125. The top lot was Marc Chagall’s La Danse, realising €634,000. Additional highlights included Van Gogh’s Femme debout ou de profil and Picasso’s Joueuse de flûte et nu couché from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York soaring past their pre-sale estimates to fetch top prices. The Rodin Museum acquired the artist’s Double portrait de Victor Hugo at €137,500, against a pre-sale low estimate of €50,000.

Our series of sales concluded with the Impressionist and Modern Art auction, with 87% sold by lot and 95% by value. Alberto Giacometti’s Projet pour un monument à la mémoire de Gabriel Péri led the sale, achieving €1,450,000, while Jeanne Hébuterne’s Femme au chapeau cloche set a new world auction record for the artist, selling for €478,000. Excellent results achieved for modern masters: Alfred Sisley’s La Seine à Bougival reached €730,000 and Picasso’s Verre et pip sold for €658,000.
