Bomberg’s experiences as a soldier in the First World War profoundly altered his outlook, and his post-war work turned away from abstraction towards a more expressive figuration. His landscapes and portraits from the 1920s and 1930s demonstrate a forceful use of line and form, as he sought to capture the emotional essence of his subjects. In the 1930s he lived in Spain and Palestine, where he painted with a raw intensity that anticipated later developments in British modernism.
Although underappreciated in his lifetime, Bomberg became a highly influential teacher at the Borough Polytechnic in London during the 1940s and 1950s. His pupils, who included Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff, carried forward his emphasis on vitality, structure and the direct expression of human experience. Today, Bomberg is recognised as a pioneering and uncompromising figure whose art bridges the early avant-garde with post-war expressionism.
