Derrick Adams

Derrick Adams (b. 1970) is an American artist whose work explores the complexities of Black identity, culture and history through a vibrant and multidisciplinary approach. In a diverse practice that spans painting, sculpture, collage and performance, Adams dives into themes of resilience, joy and self-empowerment.

Adams was born in 1970 in Baltimore, Maryland. After a brief career as an elementary school teacher, he attended the Pratt Institute and later earned his MFA from Columbia University in 2003. Since then, Adams has become a prominent figure in contemporary art, known for his ability to blend pop culture, personal narratives and social commentary into visually striking compositions.

Derrick Adams incorporates a bold use of colour, geometric shapes, and mixed-media elements in his works. He frequently addresses the depiction of Black life in mainstream culture, challenging stereotypes and offering alternative narratives that celebrate Black creativity and everyday experiences. In many of his series, like ‘Culture Club/Floater’, ‘Deconstruction Worker’ and ‘We Came to Party and Plan’, Adams includes various empowering, fulfilling and joyful portraits of Black men, women and children, exemplifying the artist’s pursuit in creating spaces that imagine alternative narratives. The artist classifies his critical and philosophical analysis through cultural examination as ‘a testament of perseverance’.

Inspired by artists such as David Hammons, Mickalene Thomas, Ed Clark and Adrian Piper, Adams also draws inspiration from pop culture, personal memory and neighbours, admitting, ‘I pay attention to everything, from store windows to people in cafes talking, to people on the corner communicating. I like to think about surroundings as source materials.’ In his other works, Adams examines the influence of television and media on shaping perceptions of Black culture. By dissecting and reassembling images from popular media, he critiques the ways in which Black people have been portrayed and controlled by dominant narratives. This critical approach to media representation is a recurring theme in his work.

Derrick Adams has exhibited widely in New York, Miami, London, Paris and Rome. His works can be found in the collections of major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
