Hernan Bas

Hernan Bas (born 1978) is an American painter whose richly narrative and visually sumptuous work has established him as a distinctive voice in contemporary figurative painting. Born in Miami, Florida, Bas studied at the New World School of the Arts before embarking on a career that blends personal memory, mythology, literature and queer identity into highly stylised, evocative compositions. His early exposure to Miami’s vibrant cultural landscape and its blend of history, folklore and subculture profoundly shaped his aesthetic sensibility, fostering a fascination with beauty, desire and transience.

Bas’ paintings are characterised by their luminous, saturated colour, intricate detail and dreamlike atmospheres. His canvases often depict youthful figures in enigmatic tableaux — moments of leisure, contemplation or ritual — that evoke both intimacy and theatricality. Drawing on Romanticism, Symbolism and art historical references from Renaissance to contemporary practice, Bas constructs worlds where narrative, memory and aesthetic form intersect. Recurrent motifs — luxurious fabrics, flora, animals and classical architecture — function as both symbolic and compositional elements, reflecting a meticulous engagement with visual storytelling.

In addition to his studio practice, Bas has contributed to the discourse on contemporary identity, queerness and aesthetics in painting. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Rubell Museum, Miami and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and is held in prominent public and private collections.
