Mark Rothko drawings

Mark Rothko’s drawings offer a window into his artistic process, revealing a career far more diverse than the large-scale Colour Field paintings for which he is best known. Long overlooked, his drawings have only recently been studied in depth, highlighting his use of watercolour, ink, graphite and crayon alongside oils. Often working spontaneously in sketchbooks, he explored a wide range of subjects, including portraits, landscapes and urban scenes. Whether experimenting with structure or layering washes of colour, Rothko’s drawings reflect his evolving artistic vision and deep engagement with abstraction.
