Collections du Château de Tournay : La Bibliothèque

Collections du Château de Tournay : La Bibliothèque

Sale Overview

---

Nestled at the heart of a setting of stone, woodwork, and greenery — alongside the finest creations of French classical Decorative Arts (sale on June 17) — the library of the Château de Tournay is truly an invitation to stroll arm in arm with the greatest names in our literary history.

Located in Voltaire’s former château, the philosopher naturally occupies a central place there, notably with his Oeuvres bound with the gilt arms of Tsarina Maria Feodorovna, and the famous “Kehl edition” in contemporary morocco. Authors and provenances converse across centuries: from Montaigne to Empress Marie-Louise, from Madame de Pompadour to Picasso, and from La Fontaine to Léger. Lovers of modern books will also find much to love here, with numerous carefully selected copies, sporting remarkable bindings designed by Paul Bonet, Pierre Legrain, or Rose Adler. Travel books, works on architecture, and livres de fêtes also populate this collection, encompassing evidently varied themes but always with impeccable taste.

Last but definitely not least, the books from the library are in remarkable condition —a decisive criterion for many bibliophiles, and a testament to the discerning collector who patiently gathered them over several decades.
