People have been capturing their own likeness for nearly 40,000 years. Beginning with simple, stylized renderings before later permeating their subjects with sophistication and psychological depth, artists have continuously reinvented the genre to reflect the times in which they lived. Today, a new range of exciting and diverse voices has emerged to further reinvigorate this noble tradition.
Framing the Figure presents an exciting selection of works from some of these new practitioners, together with established masters. From the flurried figures of Willem de Kooning to the quiet considerations of Alex Katz, and from the piercing narratives of Diane Arbus to the private, atmospheric world of Salman Toor, these works demonstrate the richness and continued importance of painting the human figure in defining and celebrating contemporary society.
