Sale Overview

This July, Christie’s presents M.C. Escher: The Art of Infinitythe most significant offering of works on paper by the artist to come to market in decades. Included in the sale are iconic prints such as Bond of UnionDay and Night and Other World in addition to many rare prints that have seldom been to public auction. The unprecedented selection of drawings by the artist includes early depictions of the Italian landscape, preparatory studies for many of his well-known prints and a self-portrait of the artist, among many others.

M.C. Escher: The Art of Infinity features a selection of prints and drawings from the Robert Owen Lehman Foundation, sold to benefit the Foundation’s mission to promote the appreciation of classical music.

Lindsay Griffith

Head of Department | Prints & Multiples

Lindsay Griffith is the Head of Department for Prints and Multiples in New York. In this role she is responsible for leading business getting in the region as well as advising clients on collecting, appraisals and private sales. She has been responsible for a number of auction records in the category by artists such as Andy Warhol, Louise Bourgeois, and Cy Twombly.

For the last decade she has been instrumental in a diverse range of specialized Post-War and Contemporary editions auctions including 35 Works by Ed Ruscha, the Dedalus Foundation, Thiebaud from Wayne Thiebaud, and the Andy Warhol Foundation. Most recently Lindsay managed the single-owner sales of the Collection of Lois Torf in September 2021, The Sale of the Century in April 2023 and the Collection of Alan and Mariane Schwartz in October 2024, some of the most significant collections of prints to come to market in recent years.

Lindsay’s particular focus is on Post-War and Contemporary prints, and she lectures frequently on the subject. She joined the Print Department in 2010 after starting at Christie’s in 2008 and holds a BA from Barnard College, Columbia University where she received the Nancy Hoffman Prize for excellence in Art History.

Richard Lloyd

International Department Head | Prints & Multiples

Richard Lloyd is the International Head of the Prints & Multiples department, overseeing more than twenty auctions per year. He began his career as a junior specialist at Phillips in London in 1989, before moving to Christie’s in 1998, where he rose to become International Head in 2007. He relocated to Christie’s New York in 2012.

Richard has been responsible for some of the most noteworthy Print auctions of the last two decades, from Old Masters (Rembrandt 400, Albrecht Durer: Genius of the German Renaissance; Graphic Masterpieces by Goya), to modern and contemporary (Hockney on Paper; Warhol 10 x 10 and Thiebaud from Thiebaud). In addition he has overseen sales which established world auction records for prints by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Edvard Munch, Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Miro and many others.

Aside from his work in the field of live auctions, where he is the principal auctioneer for the department, Richard is also a key member of the team pioneering Christie’s move into the digital arena. During his tenure the department has held a string of successful online sales, featuring work by Murakami, Matisse, Stella, Picasso, Warhol and Chagall. He is also responsible for major private sales to collectors and museums around the world.

Lou Clinton-Celini

Cataloguer | Impressionist & Modern Art

Lou Clinton-Celini is the Impressionist and Modern Cataloguer for the Impressionist and Modern Art department in New York, responsible for researching the Works on Paper and Day sales. She joined the team as Expertise Coordinator in 2021 and, prior to joining Christie’s, received her Master’s Degree in Art History from Sorbonne University in Paris, as well as a Bachelor’s Degree with honors from Columbia University in New York.
