Maîtres Anciens : Peintures - Sculptures, Online

Sale Overview

Notably, the sale will feature a collection of 21 portraits by Louis Léopold Boilly, one of the most assiduous chroniclers of Parisian life at the turn of the 19th century, and six works from the famous collection of Adolphe Schloss, one of the most important French collections looted during World War II, which have recently been restituted to his descendants.

Powerful images such as The Temptation of Adam and Eve by Lukas van Valkenborch and a new addition to the work of the Swiss painter, Nikolaus Manuel will be among the selection of Northern works on offer, and the French school are also well represented by paintings from the great masters of the 19th century, Corot and Daubigny. Exceptionally, this sale includes a portrait by American artist John White Alexander, which comes directly from the sitter’s family.

Goldsmiths and silversmiths will also be celebrated by the Payer Collection, a unique group of 35 lots that traces the history of German Renaissance and Baroque metalwork. The centrepiece of this group is a majestic ostrich egg and vermeil bowl by Sylvester Eberlin, dated 1580 to 1590 and made in Augsburg.
