The Collection of Baron Diego von Buch

Sale Overview
Christie’s is honoured to be entrusted with the sale of The Collection of Baron Diego von Buch in London this June. Weaving together the rich and distinctive strands of Baron von Buch’s eclectic collecting passions — at Cap Ferrat, Milan, St Moritz and London — the collection bears witness to his uniquely bold and vibrant artistic vision.
Modern design was a particular focus of Baron von Buch’s collecting and a group of exquisite works by Les Lalanne are at the heart of the collection, alongside works by other leading modern designers including Lino Tagliapietra, Ron Arad, Marc Fish and Piero Fornasetti. Sculpture was another great passion and the sale includes important works by Fernando Botero, Jean-Michel Folon and Barry Flanagan.
Another key highlight is Fernand Léger’s striking Composition au damier (Composition jaune et noir), 1929 which hung as a focal point in the Baron’s Milan home, alongside works by other leading modern and contemporary artists including Max Ernst, Anish Kapoor and Christo.
Spanning a millennium from the 11th to the 21st centuries, the collection also comprises a selection of Baron von Buch’s furniture, decorative arts and silver, including an important German silver wager cup and a remarkable early Indian sandstone torso of a Jina.
