Tanjore paintings — also known as Thanjavur paintings — hold a revered position within Indian art, celebrated for their vibrant colours, intricate detailing and distinctive use of gold foil. Originating from the temple traditions of Thanjavur in southern India, these devotional works depict richly decorated Hindu deities, often enhanced with elaborate ornamentation. Created during the 17th and 18th centuries, Tanjore paintings are typically characterised by their elaborate gesso work and glass inlay, showcasing the skill of master craftsmen. Today, these paintings remain highly prized for their enduring beauty and centuries-old artistic techniques.
