Christie’s Hong Kong held two live wine and spirits auctions – “Iconic Wines from Joseph Lau Part II” and “Finest and Rarest Wines & Spirits”, realising a combined sale total of HK$89,097,500 / US$11,470,715. With the conclusion of Part II of the sale series, “Iconic Wines from Joseph Lau” totalled over HK$125 million / US$16 million overall.

The Collection of Rosamund Kwan Achieved a Total HK$86,072,220 / US$11,070,351 Sold Lots Achieved 114% Over Low Estimate

Christie’s Magnificent Jewels Including The Collection of Rosamund Kwan totalled HK$359,380,860 / US$46,222,488 with solid sell-through rates of 86% by lot and 82% by value and drew global participation from 21 countries across 3 continents. Lots 1955 and 1956 from The Collection of Rosemund Kwan drew competitive bidding in the sale room and via telephone taking over 15 minutes, and eventually selling to the same private collector in the room.

Christie’s Hong Kong Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art Sale Series

Christie’s Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art live auctions achieved a total of HK$482,951,920 / US$62,054,154

Both single-owner sales – “The Chang Wei-Hwa Collection of Archaic Jades Part IV - The Qin and Han Periods” and “Rich Golden Hues and Graceful Forms - Classical Chinese Furniture From The Tseng Collection” – were 100% sold.

Achieving a world record, lot 2806, A Magnificent Huanghuali Circular Incense Stand, Xiangji, from the “Rich Golden Hues and Graceful Forms – Classical Chinese Furniture From The Tseng Collection” sale saw competitive bidding in the room and on the telephones. It resulted in the final hammer achieving over nine times its low estimate, and a result of HK$71,327,500 / US$9,164,821. Lot 2702, A Very Rare Jade Carving of an 'Eagle and Bear' Group, Western Han Dynasty, from “The Chang Wei-Hwa Collection of Archaic Jades Part IV – The Qin and Han Periods” also received highly competitive bidding across Asia, selling to a bidder in the room for eight times its low estimate, for HK$3,276,000 / US$420,931. Important 17th Century Porcelain from the Butler Family Collection, which comprised 60 lots, and part of the ‘Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art’ sale, was 100% sold.

Christie’s Hong Kong 20th/21st Century Art Sale Series

ANNUAL TOTAL FOR THE 20TH / 21ST CENTURY ART CATEGORY IN ASIA: HK$3,391,274,680 / US$436,175,574 Second Highest Annual Total at Christie’s Asia

Christie’s Hong Kong staged a series of five 20th and 21st Century Art auctions – the “20th/21st Century Art Evening Sale” and the thematic “Post-Millennium Evening Sale” on 30 November, “Marc Chagall, Colour of Life: Works Formerly from the Artist's Estate (Part II)”, “20th Century Art Day Sale” and “21st Century Art Day Sale” on 1 December – achieving a combined sale total of HK$1,231,797,300 / US$158,430,073.

The 20th / 21st Century Art sales continued on 1 December with three live day sales. “Marc Chagall, Colour of Life, Works Formerly From The Artist’s Estate (Part II)” continued the successes for the collection following Part I in London, achieving a total of HK$74,436,000 / US$9,573,735 and 192% hammer above low estimate, with 100% of the works sold. The 20th Century Day Sale realised a total of HK$146,842,200 / US$18,886,403, achieving 130% hammer over low estimate. Zao Wou-Ki’s 29.4.88 led the sale, realising HK$18,450,000 / US$2,372,984. The 21st Century Day Sale concluded the 20th / 21st Century Art live auctions, with a total of HK$192,680,100 / US$24,781,936, achieving 146% hammer above low estimate.

Christie’s Hong Kong Chinese Paintings Sale Series

Christie’s Chinese Paintings live auctions achieved a combined total of HK$283,288,380 / US$36,589,046, with 112% hammer above low estimate.

The “Fine Chinese Modern and Contemporary Ink Paintings” sale presented “Bountiful Colours: Important Lin Fengmian Paintings From The Robert Chang Collection”, alongside “Important Huang Binhong Paintings And Calligraphy From The Xicha’an Collection”, both of which were 100% sold.

The “Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy” sale achieved a sale total of HK$90,651,360 / US$11,708,376, with 91% sold by value and 168% hammer above low estimate. Lot 829 Wen Zhengming’s “Fu Di” Poems in Running Cursive Script realised HK$26,850,000 / US$3,467,900, more than 17 times over its high estimate, becoming the most valuable lot of the Chinese Paintings sale series.
