Lot Essay

Désirée Clary, daughter of Franois Clary, an important silk manufacturer in Marseilles, married the French General Jean Bernadotte in 1798. In 1818, the latter became Karl XVI Johan of Sweden and, in 1829, his consort was crowned Queen Desideria.

After her death, a valuation was made for the purpose of family division in which the picture was valued at 300 Riksdaler Banco. The original manuscript of the valuation is in the Royal Archives, Stockholm.

We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph.
