Lot Essay

The artist based this composition on a prototype by his father, Jan Brueghel the Elder, perhaps that now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (see Ertz, op. cit., p. 300, no. 337). The present picture shows slight variation in the depiction of the tazza and also omits several jewels which are included in the Brussels picture.

This lot is sold with photocopies of certificates from Dr. Sam Segal, dated 29 November 1988 and Dr. Klaus Ertz dated 15 January 1990, both of whom attribute the picture in full to Jan Brueghel II.
