Lot Essay

This composition derives from two paintings by Rubens; the first one, dating from circa 1614 is in the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Conneticut, the second is at Holkham Hall, Norfolk. A drawing by Van Dyck after the first version was then used for an engraving by Lucas Vosterman, dated 1620, in reverse.
