The Rest on the Flight into Egypt

The Flight into Egypt is a subject that Jean-Jacques Lagrenée painted many times. This painting is possibly the Salon entry of either 1775 (no. 134) or 1779 (no. 45). The dimensions of both correspond with our painting (see M. Sandoz, Les Lagrenée, II, Jean-Jacques Lagrenée, Paris, 1988, p. 191, no. 38, p. 221, no. 123).
