A GEORGE III MAHOGANY CYLINDER BUREAU

Crossbanded overall and inlaid with boxwood lines, the moulded rectangular cornice above a plain panelled frieze centred by a tablet carved with a husk-trailed Neo-Classical urn, above a pair of gothic glazed doors enclosing three adjustable shelves, the cylinder enclosing a green baize-lined writing slide with central adjustable ratchet reading slope, pigeon-hole and drawers, above three long graduated drawers, and a waived apron on splayed feet, inscribed to the reverse in chalk DINING-ROOM with depository label

Lot Essay

The 'tambour writing table' with dressing drawers corresponds to patterns published in A. Hepplewhite and Co.'s Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, pls. 68 and 76. The cabinet's pointed-arch glazing pattern was published in The Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices, 1788, pl. 16, no. 10.
