A SOUMAC CARPET
NORTH CAUCASUS, dated AH 1279 (1862-3 AD)

The lemon-yellow field with diagonal rows of small quartered lozenges, in a medium blue rosette and mock-kufic border between rust-red flowerhead, reciprocal skittle-pattern and minor mill-pattern stripes, dated in reversed script in two places, braided ends, shows some wear, areas of reweaving, slight damage to braided ends
Approximately 10ft. x 5ft.10in. (305cm. x 178cm.)

Warp: wool, white or 1 strand white with 1 strand dark brown, Z2S, undulating, 8 warps/cm.
Weft: 1 shoot, 1 strand brown wool with 1 strand white wool or cotton, or red wool, Z2S, slightly undulating
Design wefts: wool, Z2S, 4/cm.
Sides: main and additional red, green and yellow wefts 2 x Z2S flat-woven around two additional warps
Ends: flatwoven with wool shoots Z2S, one strand white with one strand dark brown, then 5-7 warps knotted together in a lattice

Lot Essay

This soumac is unusual both in its design and in the fact that it is dated. While dates on Caucasian rugs are relatively common within the field of rugs and carpets, they are rare both on North Caucasian pieces and also on soumacs.
