A 'TRANSYLVANIAN' PRAYER RUG
WEST ANATOLIA, SECOND HALF 17TH CENTURY

The plain red prayer mihrab within a shaded yellow panel with angular floral sprays in the spandrels, in a broad yellow border of large palmettes flanked by paired serrated leaves alternating with rosettes and divided by hyacinth sprays, inner red meandering flowering vine stripe, even wear, holes, border partially reduced, tattered and torn, small crude repairs
Approximately 4ft.3in. x 3ft.9in. (130cm. x 114cm.)

Warp: yellow wool, Z2S, hardly depressed, undulating
Weft: two shoots, wool, Z1, yellow at the borders, red in the middle field, sometimes three shoots, the first (and third) undulating, the second strongly undulating
Pile: wool, Z1, knots symmetrical inclined to the left, H2.8 x V3.0/cm. Remarks: lazy lines
