Lot Essay

Pierre Roussel, maître in 1745

This commode is part of a group of small commodes by Roussel, embellished with floral marquetry cartouches of roses, carnations, daffodils and sometimes tulips, usually within ormolu borders. The marquetry scheme on this commode is particularly close to that on a commode sold from the estate of Dorothy Patterson Jackson at Christie's New York, 13 June 1987, lot 181. A further related commode by Roussel was sold anonymously at Sotheby's Monaco, 25 26 June 1983, lot 66.
