Lot Essay

René Dubois, maître in 1755

This cylinder-bureau is stamped I.DUBOIS, the brand employed by René Dubois in his rue de Charenton atelier, inherited from his father, Jacques Dubois, following his death in 1762. This was first observed by J.Nicolay in L'art et la manière des Maîtres Ebénistes français au XVIIIe siècle, Paris, 1956, pp. 94-95, and it is generally assumed that furniture of pronounced Louis XVI character, bearing this stamp, is by René rather than his father.
