A LARGE GERMAN SPORTING CROSSBOW AND CRANEQUIN

LATE 16TH CENTURY, ENGRAVED WITH SPURIOUS DATE 1535

With massive steel bow struck with a mark, original bindings, retaining cords, string and pom-poms, wooden tiller swelling towards the middle and almost entirely covered in panels of white staghorn (some cracked) with a dark horn panel on the cheek-piece (later?) brass nut, small iron stirrup, iron cranequin-lugs, long iron trigger-guard, swivelling safety-catch, folding set trigger, and iron cranequin with circular gear-box, iron retaining loop, and slender winding-arm with wooden handle (belt hook missing)
