Having travelled around India as Thomas Daniell's assistant, William Daniell started work on the 308 plates for his Voyage Round Great Britain in 1813. He went from Land's End to Holyhead in 1813 and in 1814 from Holyhead to Creetown. In 1815 he completed the Scottish coasts and in 1821 he went from St. Andrew's to Southend, in 1822 from Sheerness to Torquay and in 1823 from Torquay to Land's End.
Although the size and subject matter of the present group of watercolours are similar to the original drawings for Daniell's Voyage Round Great Britain only two of the subjects relate to the published plates, Culzean Castle appears as the subject of plate 58 and Dunrobin Castle appears as plates 169 and 170.
