Lot Essay

See the note regarding the 'Northumberland sketchbook' following lot 44. The sketchbook also included drawings of Dunstanburgh Castle. Varley exhibited several watercolours of Dunstanburgh at the Old Watercolour Society between 1809 and 1811; the present watercolour is possibly the one exhibited as number 90 in 1809.
