Lot Essay

Bartholomew was largely self-taught and for some time worked for Charles Hullmandel. He was a member of the New Water-Colour Society by 1834, was elected Associate of the Old Watercolour Society in 1835 and appointed Flower Painter in Ordinary to the Queen in 1837. He grew the flowers he painted in his own conservatory.
