Lot Essay

Lewis was based in Cairo 1841-51.
The Sheikh el Belled referred to in the title of this watercolour would have been the chief of the local village who would, no doubt, have acted as guide to travelling artists, to local places of interest such as the Temple at Kom Ombo. Kom Ombo lies about 100 miles upstream from Luxor.
